Carrier, Bryant & Payne
Carrier
Willis Carrier, an engineer at the Buffalo Forge Company, is credited with inventing modern air conditioning in 1902. In 1915 he and six fellow engineers pooled $32,600 to start the Carrier Engineering Corporation.
Carrier opened its first factory in Newark, New Jersey in 1920. United Technologies bought the company in 1979, and in 2020 Carrier became an independent public company again. Today Carrier Global is headquartered right here in Florida, in Palm Beach Gardens.
Bryant
Charles Bryant started his company in Cleveland, Ohio in 1904, building gas regulators before moving into gas heating. In 1918 Bryant installed the first residential gas heating system in America, in a home in Denver.
Bryant became part of Carrier in 1955, and in 1996 it introduced Puron refrigerant.
Payne
Payne dates back to 1914, when D.W. Payne and his son began building gravity furnaces in a converted barn in Los Angeles. In 1933 the company introduced the first forced-air down-discharge furnace.
Payne joined Carrier in 1955 alongside Bryant. Carrier has since moved the Payne brand into its WeatherMaker line, and we still service existing Payne systems.
Common Carrier, Bryant and Payne problems we fix: Weak or failed capacitors and contactors, refrigerant leaks, clogged condensate drain lines, frozen evaporator coils, fan motor problems and thermostat or control board faults.
Trane & American Standard
Trane
In 1885 James Trane, a Norwegian immigrant, opened a plumbing shop in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He and his son Reuben incorporated The Trane Company in 1913.
Reuben Trane's convector radiator arrived in 1923, and the company built its first air conditioning unit in 1931. American Standard bought Trane in 1984, Ingersoll Rand acquired it in 2008, and the company took the name Trane Technologies in 2020.
American Standard
American Standard was formed in 1929 when the American Radiator Company and the Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company merged. It shortened its name to American Standard in 1967.
The American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning brand is now part of Trane Technologies, so Trane and American Standard systems are close relatives.
Common Trane and American Standard problems we fix: Capacitor and contactor failures, refrigerant leaks, drain line clogs and float switch shutoffs, dirty coils, blower and condenser fan motor problems, and control board faults.
Lennox
Lennox
Lennox was founded in 1895 in Marshalltown, Iowa, by Dave Lennox, who owned a railroad machine repair shop. The company was built around a riveted steel coal furnace patented by Ezra Smith and Ernest Bryant.
In 1904 a group of investors led by D.W. Norris bought the company. Lennox International went public in 1999 and is headquartered in Richardson, Texas.
Common Lennox problems we fix: Failed capacitors, refrigerant leaks, frozen coils, clogged drain lines, blower motor issues, and thermostat and communication control problems.
Goodman, Amana & Daikin
Daikin owns both Goodman and Amana heating and cooling, so these three brands are part of the same family.
Goodman
Harold V. Goodman founded the company in Texas in 1975. The company moved into heating and air conditioning in 1982 when it acquired Janitrol, and in 1997 it bought Amana's business and kept the heating and cooling side.
Daikin acquired Goodman in 2012 for about $3.7 billion. In 2017 Daikin opened the Daikin Texas Technology Park in Waller, Texas, and in 2022 Goodman was renamed Daikin Comfort Technologies North America.
Amana
George Foerstner founded Amana in 1934 in Middle Amana, Iowa, building commercial walk-in coolers. Amana began making air conditioners in 1954, and Raytheon owned the company from 1965 to 1997.
Today Amana heating and cooling equipment comes from the Goodman and Daikin family, while Amana-brand kitchen appliances belong to Whirlpool.
Daikin
Akira Yamada founded Daikin in Osaka, Japan in October 1924 as Osaka Kinzoku Kogyosho. The company became Daikin Industries in 1963.
Daikin entered the North American air conditioning market in 2004 and bought Goodman in 2012.
Common Goodman, Amana and Daikin problems we fix: Capacitor and contactor failures, refrigerant leaks at coils and fittings, drain line clogs, frozen coils, fan motor problems, and inverter or control board faults on variable-speed systems.
Rheem & Ruud
Rheem
Brothers Richard and Donald Rheem started Rheem in 1925 in Emeryville, California, making galvanized steel drums. The company incorporated in 1930, and by 1941 it was the largest maker of automatic water heaters in the United States.
Rheem introduced its Rheemaire central air conditioning and heating line in 1956. Japan's Paloma has owned Rheem since 1988, and the company is headquartered in Atlanta.
Ruud
Edwin Ruud, a Norwegian-born engineer who worked for George Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, developed the first automatic storage gas water heater, which went into production in 1889. He founded the Ruud Manufacturing Company in 1897.
The Ruud heating and air conditioning line was introduced in the 1950s, and Rheem acquired Ruud around 1960. Ruud remains part of the Rheem family today.
Common Rheem and Ruud problems we fix: Weak capacitors, refrigerant leaks, clogged drain lines and float switch trips, dirty or frozen coils, fan motor failures and control board problems.
